about

Tokyo-born recorder player/improviser Eiko Yamada has lived in Germany since 1984 and currently resides in Heidelberg. Yamada performs in formations ranging from solo to large ensemble, as well as with a variety of artists including dancers and poets. She returns to Japan once or twice a year and appears in a small number of concerts in Tokyo.

During her stay in Japan in summer 2023, Yamada performed with pianist Fumi Endo at Ftarri on August 13. In addition to their duo performance, each musician played a solo. The two tracks on this CD, each about 25 minutes, document Yamada’s solo (on soprano and bass recorders) and her duo with Fumi Endo (in which she played bass recorder only). The abstract and intense reverberation of Yamada’s recorder sound can only be called amazing.

山田衛子は東京生まれ、ドイツ、ハイデルベルク在住のリコーダー奏者 / 即興演奏家。1984年よりドイツに住み、ソロからラージ・アンサンブルまで様々な編成で演奏。ダンサーや詩人などとの共演もおこなう。年に1～2度日本に帰国し、その際には数は少ないものの東京でもライヴをおこなっている。

2023年の夏に一時帰国した山田は、8月13日にピアニストの遠藤ふみと共に Ftarri に出演し、それぞれのソロとデュオ演奏を披露した。本CDには、そのコンサートでの山田のソロと、山田と遠藤のデュオ演奏、25分前後の2曲を収録。山田はソロでソプラノ・リコーダーとバス・リコーダーを、デュオではバス・リコーダーのみを使用。リコーダーをアブストラクトに強烈に響かせる山田の演奏は、まさに圧巻の一語。緊張感溢れるデュオ演奏も見事！

Masahide Tokunaga is one of the most interesting contemporary saxophonists, it's hard to find a comparison. The sub-tonal sound he gets from the instrument is perhaps closer to the character of feedback, and the work with space and silence is exceptional.
